As I’ve mentioned in my earlier posts, Rachel Viccaji was undoubtedly the breakout star of 2009. She left us all in astonishment with her critically acclaimed performance in Nida Butt’s blockbuster hit musical, “Mamma Mia” as well as crowd pleasing LIVE musical performances.
I must also mention Zoe in this regard, since this was equally her year as well! She also had an integral role in “Mamma Mia”, along with her younger sister. The year, 2009 was her ascension towards her destined music career.
Check out Rachel’s sister: Zoe Viccaji’s song “Thinking About You” and you’ll realize the incredible talent hidden within Pakistan!!
“Thinking of You” is *the* song for this holiday season.
It’s a tender and heartfelt ado to a relationship’s closed chapter. You really do feel her pain in the lyrics. Though she means no harm, nor any resentment to her ex-high school sweetheart, the listener isn’t so forgiving. What a douche bag to lose a girl like Zoe!
In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this song hits a new peak of professionalism.
It’s hard to choose a favorite among so many great tracks, but “Not Ready” is one of the best, most powerful songs ever written about self-preservation, dignity. Its universal message crosses all boundaries and instills one with the hope that it’s not too late to better ourselves. Since, it’s impossible in this world we live in to empathize with others, we can always empathize with ourselves. It’s an important message, crucial really. And it’s beautifully stated on the song.
I recently heard her Zoe’s single, “Memories”. I think she has really identified into their own, commercial and artistically. The song, though still not completely produced because of the meager packaging and short length, still manages to deliver clear, crisp sounds, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. Notice how in the middle of the song Zoe progresses into a slightly faster, more intense acoustic strum, which then quickly subsides. The “angel” and “hot chocolate” references easily blend into the overall theme of “Memories”. Is this song about her being a guardian angel or vice verse ?
(Note: I’m not the least bit qualified within the realm of conventional music criticism, hence I might have mistaken the themes of ex-relationships of “Thinking about You” to “Memories”. I apologize for the mistakes in my judgment, if any.)
She’s been compared to Diana Krall, but I think Zoe’s lyrics have a far more bitter, cynical sense of humour hidden in the songs.
To categorize her as a run of the mill jazz musician is an understatement. Her voice is soft and fragile, and I guess that’s her unique selling point. A slight whisper, a higher note, that’s all she needs to make her songs exquisite and complete.
There is something about Zoe that just puts her listeners at ease. Listening to her songs is like the feeling you get when one of those nippy breezes just stingles your spine and gives you goosebumps. (but in a really really good way)
I’ve listened to her songs like a million times now! They are always a part of every play-list I make.
Credit must be given where it’s due = ENTER: ” Shahzad Hassan ” (a.k.a Shahi), whose pristine and solid production values have molded Zoe’s songs to the level of successful actualization they are today.
The Viccaji sisters have truly brought an evolution to Pakistani pop music.
Cyrus Viccaji is also worthy of being mentioned. An accomplished and artistic filmmaker with a knack for capturing the right shot at the right moment! GEO is lucky to have you Cyrus!!
Renowned photographer Amean J. ’s website also has Cyrus and Zoe’s picture as part of his portfolio. Speaking of photographs, nothing beats Fayyaz Ahmed’s photoshoot during Zoe’s recording sessions with Shahi.(Fayyaz hasn’t impressed me apart from that particular photoshoot of his, I rather prefer Kohi Marri’s photography. But that’s just me. Sorry Fayyaz.)
God bless the VICCAJI family.
